“Come and stay a while”, says the inviting atmosphere of the Cape Cod house. It looks and is comfortable, whether it is a weekend cottage for busy city people, or a home in the newer part of town. A bit of wood paneling in a dado or over the mantelpiece and gay wallpapers (little figures, scenes with houses, flower medallion) are appropriate with hooked rugs and maple, pine, or cherry furniture. Below are a trestle table, bench, roundabout chair, and even a small dresser –enough to start off any bride and groom.
If, on the other hand you have adjoining rooms, use this Early American furniture in both rooms. In the living room, have a sofa, two upholstered chairs, one good sized table, a corner cabinet, two or three small tables, and Windsor chairs. I always live in choosing good small tables and side chairs, as they add so much comfort to a room. Leave out the cabinet at first, if need be, but have a little table to hold a lamp, or if you have a floor lamp, to hold books or a plant.
We are coming to realize more and more that except in the case of large families, the dining room is a rather extravagant use of space. Instead of two small rooms, one large with a deep recess as below, or a corner as to the left, makes an excellent combination room. It seem to me that the secret of success in such a room is not to have to move chairs lamps, or what ever you, between meals and to have the table near the door to the kitchen. Then dishes can be removed easily, and bowl of fruit left on the table between meals. In the room above, a china and linen closet is at right and the kitchen door at the left. The home like room above offers suggestions for many a one story or ranch house type where the main area is one combination room. Note the arrangement and that the light scale of the modern and provincial furniture blends happily with the rugged stone fireplace. An important point, however, is the wall to wall carpeting of a modern, provincial pattern in turquoise, grays, beige and greens which ties the room together. Here

And today we have much the same kinds in attractive forms and colors at the right prices; they are made here and fit in with our way to life. Fine bone china and earthenware from both England and French including Wedgwood, Royal Worcester, Royal Dalton, Spade, Limoges, and Quipper pottery, are all well known and liked. We have our own fine Leno x, Syracuse, Oneida china and Vernon pottery ranging from the finest made anywhere to the less expensive, but still in good design. We use it on our tables and display it on pine, oak, or maple dressers like that shown below. Though the possession of fine china is a great joy, if it is not within your means, select that of the color and type to suit your particular room and budget.
